The history of the brand
The story begins in 2016, when Marion Descottes, the founder of Kulile, moves to Mozambique and creates custom-made rooms for children. Listening to her clients' needs, she proposes unique and colourful combinations in each of her projects.
Kulile is pronounced "Koulilé" and means "a person who grows" in Changane, a Mozambican dialect.
Now based in Portugal, Kulile offers a wide choice of colours and the option of customisation.
A few kilometres from Porto, Portugal, our workshop is located between vineyards and small villages, in a region renowned for the quality of its furniture making.
All Kulile furniture is veneered with real wood from sustainably managed forests by skilled craftsmen. Some steps in the manufacturing process, such as painting, are done by hand.
A few questions to Marion Descottes, the creator of Kulile.
What type of products do you make?
Above all, I make furniture that is designed for the whole family and that will last over time. When I design a new product, I think about where it will fit and how it will be used in the home, and how I might live with it.
What is the starting point for your designs?
The starting point is always a utility, a functionality. From a creative point of view, I like the idea of working around the shape of the drawer opening. This shape is found throughout the range.
Are you sensitive to ethical and environmental issues?
Yes, that's why we manufacture in Europe with European oak. Also, since the creation of the Kulile brand, we are a member of 1% For The Planet and we donate 1% of our sales to an association working for reforestation.
The object you have created and of which you were the most proud and why?
My favourite piece of furniture from the collection is the bedside table. It is very practical, pretty and discreet at the same time. I enjoy using it every day!
