About Caracara collective

Turning biowaste into art and design

Caracara Collective is an experimental design studio, creating art and design installations and collections using local organic waste. We envision a future without harmful materials and where waste is a resource. We believe that conscious design can be created anywhere in the world using locally available waste streams.

Our materials are handcrafted from 100% natural ingredients, which means that after their useful life they can be composted or broken down to make new products. We strive to work with local resources and therefore our work mainly consists of orange peel, pine needles and mycelium.

Most of our lampshades, furniture and sculptures involve little design, but gain shape instinctively as a result of exploring a particular material or a process. In our work we aim to push the boundaries of what can be done with biomaterials.

The studio is run by Aleksi Vesaluoma, designer and material maker, and Aleksi Puustinen, designer and fine woodworker. The studio was formed in Helsinki in early 2019 but our biomaterial research started in 2015.
