Belgium is Design

«With its rich creative history, Belgium has been home to countless talents who left their mark on the history of design from the 19th century onwards.»

A favourite destination for lovers of art and decoration, the country continues to feed our collective imagination with icons of all kinds, along with unique approaches.

DesignerBox has attempted to get under the skin of Belgian design, which blends  sensitivity and dynamism in equal measure.

Since the end of the 19th century, two famous Belgian architects have left their stamp on international design history. Victor Horta, a pioneer of the Art Nouveau style, stands out for masterful buildings that still dot several streets in the Belgian capital. Meanwhile, painter, architect and decorator Henry van de Velde is still considered one of the founding fathers of the modern movement. The two men, who were contemporaries and brothers at war, both designed several pieces of furniture, especially chairs, that have remained a perennial source of inspiration for young Belgian designers.

Travelling through the country’s main cities, from Antwerp to Brussels, via Ghent or even Courtrai, opens your eyes to this creative vitality thanks to the sheer number of design stores and other contemporary interiors showrooms, each seemingly more inventive than the last. The region also now hosts several iconic design-themed events and exhibitions that regularly attract design-lovers from around the world: the Biennale Intérieur in Courtrai and Design September in Brussels are just two events that bear witness to an ever-buzzing creative scene.

So the purpose of this box is to drink, using Scissors’ Sisters (and in moderation!), to the health and appeal of Belgian design!
