Invited, in 2007, to come up with a perennial installation for the parkland of the château and island of Nègrepelisse (Tarn et Garonne), Studio 5.5 stepped up to the plate by creating seven wonderfully staggered little scenes for the seven hectares of this Espace Naturel Sensible (‘Sensitive Natural Area’).
‘The best picnics are those that immerse us in our surroundings, those that allow us to go back to nature in a situation of total detachment from the civilised world.’
This is a wink in the direction of the famous tree-trunk bench by Jürgen Bey, with its three chair backs. But Studio 5•5 goes further, reappropriating the archetypal Vichy tablecloth with its red and white squares – a popular, trans-generational element that symbolises country picnics.
By dotting the park with stiff tablecloths created from little Bisazza tiles placed on elements present withhin the space, the designers invite visitors to invest each scene with their presence via a picnic – alone, as a couple or with the family. A rock, a tree trunk or stump, the banks of a stream… All become primal furniture that satisfies our need for comfort by forming the core of an improvised camp.
