Maximalism design, the trend for opulence

Endless white, pared-back shapes and relentless natural woods: the Scandinavian look has dominated Pinterest for years. Is it just weariness or is it its coldness that is making us seek out a dose of warmth?
Whichever it is, the current mode is for mixing up traditional Nordic interiors with opulent and sometimes quirky touches. Time to put a spotlight on the ‘French touch’ and on two unmissable designers who focus on luxurious textures, prints, colours and fabrics to create unique and covetable public spaces.
Named Designer of the Year by Maison & Objet in September 2015, industrial design graduate Dorothée Meilichzon runs her own Agency, Chzon, which is becoming known for its trendy restaurant interiors, including the Hôtel Bachaumont with its twisted classicism, the slick but cosy Ball Room and the rawly chic Café Pinson. Her credo: conviviality. Her style: hybrid!

And here is the book Patterns written by Peter Koepke and published by Phaidon: the world's largest archive of patterns and textiles, the source of inspiration for the globe's top designers:

A compulsive vintage shopper, Dorothée hates ‘top to toe’ looks and enjoys playing with lots of different prints and with objects from different places to achieve a style that is super-welcoming and timeless but impactful. Like her, we are seduced by green, her favourite colour, by touches of brass and by graphic prints.
One of the designers to have most inspired Dorothée Meilichzon is India Madhavi, famed around the world for her electrifying maximalist style. This nomadic Parisian first made waves in the United States when she remodelled the Townhouse Hotel Miami Beach and has gone from strength to strength since then. In Paris, she decorated the Costes brothers’ Café Français and the Thoumieux hotel and restaurant with the same panache.
Creatively unfettered, India Madhavi fights against ‘sterile, soulless interiors where you don’t feel the owners’ personality’. Her bewitching, glamorous interiors have a joyful playfulness, mixing cultural influences and colours with abandon. Like her, we want to overload our spaces, break up their symmetry, cultivate quirkiness and never make concessions to mere comfort!
